How Much Does A Nursing Home Cost? Navigating and Understanding Aged Care Fees

Aged Care Fees at Coolibah Care

When individuals or their loved ones reach a stage in life where they require residential aged care, it’s vital to approach this journey with clarity.  Here, we break down the costs associated with residential care facilities in Mandurah, shedding some light on the financial aspects of aged care, specifically residential aged care.

The Basics of Aged Care Fees

The costs of aged care encompass a range of structured fees related to residential care. They are designed to ensure high-quality care, while also maintaining financial sustainability.  The aged care fee structure is split into a basic daily fee, a means-tested care fee, and an accommodation payment. Means-tested care fees and basic daily fees are set by the Australian Federal Government, and accommodation fees by the aged care provider dependent upon the accommodation selected.

The Structure of Aged Care Fees

Basic Daily Fee

This fee covers the day-to-day expenses associated with living in a residential facility. This covers services such as meals, laundry, cleaning, and other essential services that residents require. The basic daily fee applies to all residents, is set by the Australian Federal Government, and is 85% of the current single aged care pension. This amount increases when pensions increase twice per year.

Means-Tested Care Fee

The means-tested care fee is determined based on an individual’s financial capacity as assessed by Services Australia. This fee contributes to the overall cost of providing care services and can vary significantly; individuals with higher income and more substantial assets may be required to pay a higher means-tested fee. An annual cap to these fees does apply.

Accommodation Payment

An accommodation payment is another integral part of the aged care fee structure. These payments are associated with the room within the facility that you have chosen. You may be entitled to a contribution towards your accommodation payment from the Australian Government depending upon your asset assessment by Services Australia. There are two primary options for an accommodation payment:

Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD)

The RAD is a lump sum payment made to the residential care facility. This deposit is fully refundable when the resident leaves the facility. Interest is retained by the aged care provider to fund your accommodation fees. The specific amount of the RAD is based on the room type set by the aged care provider.

Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP)

Alternatively, residents can choose to make a daily rental-style payment, known as the DAP, for their accommodation. The DAP is calculated based on the accommodation price and the Government’s specified interest rate. Opting for the DAP eliminates the lump sum payment option (RAD) but necessitates ongoing regular payments. A combination of these two types of payments is also an option.

Available Subsidies for Aged Care Residents

The Australian Federal Government provides financial support for aged care fees for eligible residents:

Aged Pension

The aged pension can help cover the basic daily fee and provide additional financial support.

Home Care Packages

For individuals who prefer to receive care services at home rather than in a nursing home, Home Care Packages offer financial assistance. These packages provide funding for various in-home care services.

Residential Aged Care Subsidy

The government subsidises a portion of the residential care and accommodation aged care costs, making aged care more accessible. The level of subsidy a resident receives is determined by their financial assessment.

Additional Costs

While the structure of aged care fees is set, there may be additional costs when considering ‘how much does a nursing home cost?’. As an example, additional services may include on-site hairdressing, medication costs, or special events.
