Coolibah Care – specialised care for those with dementia
Coolibah Care provides specialised residential dementia care in Mandurah, with two secure, purpose-designed areas within our 136-bed home in the heart of town. Our Coolibah Care team is trained in dementia-specific care and supports every resident with person-centred care that honours who they are and the life they have lived.
If you are reading this page, you may be at one of the hardest points in a family’s experience of dementia. Whether you are researching ahead of time or facing a decision sooner than you expected, please know two things: you are not alone, and you do not have to work it all out in one day.
Specialised dementia care, designed around the person
Coolibah Care has two areas specifically designed to care for people living with dementia. Each is a secure location where residents can move about freely and safely, with access to gardens and shared living spaces.
Every room is private, with its own ensuite bathroom, and can be personalised to reflect the resident’s history, tastes and preferences. We encourage families to bring photos, mementos and familiar items from home. These touches matter. They help a resident feel connected to their surroundings and to their own story.
Care is delivered by a Coolibah Care team trained in dementia-specific practice, supported by registered nursing around the clock and a range of specialised support professionals, including a clinical nurse practitioner, occupational therapists, dietitians and our lifestyle team.
Understanding dementia
Dementia is not a single disease. Dementia Australia describes it as a collection of symptoms caused by disorders affecting the brain, which affect thinking, behaviour and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia are among the most common causes, and dementia becomes more common after the age of 65.
Because dementia can be caused by many different conditions, each person’s experience is unique. Some common early signs include:
- Memory changes, such as forgetting things that used to be easily remembered
- Difficulty concentrating, planning or solving problems
- Trouble judging distance, direction or time
- Changes in mood, including anxiety, low mood or agitation
- Behaviour that feels out of character, including restlessness or disturbed sleep
If you have noticed changes like these in someone you love, a conversation with a GP is the right first step. Dementia Australia also offers free information and support for families at every stage.
Support for families and carers
A move into residential care changes a family’s role. It does not end it. Families are warmly welcomed at Coolibah Care, and we encourage you to visit often, join in daily activities and share what you know about your loved one with our team. Your knowledge of their history, preferences and routines helps us care for them well.
We also understand that caring for someone living with dementia at home can be exhausting, and that carers often put their own needs last. Coolibah offers several levels of respite care, including dementia-specific support, for carers who need a planned break or unexpected help.
The Coolibah Dementia Support Series
Many of the questions families ask us are emotional as much as practical. Was it the right decision? Why has their behaviour changed? What should the first month look like? We created the Coolibah Dementia Support Series to answer these questions honestly and gently, drawing on what we see families experience every day.
Articles in the series include:
- After the Move: Supporting Someone You Love with Dementia in Residential Aged Care
- Did We Make the Right Decision? Coping with Guilt After Moving a Loved One into Care
- What to Expect in the First 30 Days of Dementia Care
- Why Dementia Behaviour Can Change in Residential Aged Care – and What Helps
You can find the full series in our News section.

What is specialised dementia care?
Specialised dementia care is residential aged care delivered in an environment designed for people living with dementia, by a team trained in dementia-specific practice. At Coolibah Care, this includes secure areas, private rooms that can be personalised, consistent routines and person-centred care planning.
How do I know when someone living with dementia needs residential care?
There is no single signpost, but common indicators include safety concerns at home, care needs continuing through the night, and carer exhaustion. An aged care assessment through My Aged Care confirms eligibility for residential care. Our team is also happy to talk through your situation, with no obligation.
Does Coolibah Care have secure dementia units?
Yes. Coolibah has two secure, purpose-designed dementia areas within our residential aged care home in Mandurah. Residents can move about freely and safely, with access to gardens and shared spaces.
Can family stay involved after a loved one moves into dementia care?
Absolutely. Family involvement is encouraged at Coolibah Care, and it makes a real difference to residents’ wellbeing. You are welcome to visit regularly, join in activities and work closely with our team.
How do I apply for dementia care at Coolibah?
An application form needs to be completed, accompanied by supporting documentation such as an ACAT assessment. Our team can guide you through each step. You can start with our residential care application page, or call us on 08 9535 0300.
